As the old-fashioned concept of a father being an unemotional pillar of manliness in a family home fades away, it is becoming easier for single fathers to get on with running a household without prejudice. For example, I can go out and buy pink flowery blinds for my daughter’s bedroom without getting funny looks off other fellers. In fact, being a single father is no longer as much of a conversation stopper as it used to be – whether I am buying blinds for a bedroom or a pint at my local. Having said that, I cannot say that I have suddenly developed a penchant for creative interior decor, I’d still choose popping out to the pub over spending all afternoon choosing curtains. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy making a home as much as I used to with my late wife, but since she has gone, I have to be everything for our daughter, so where I used to put up shelves, sort the plumbing and re-felt the shed roof, now I have adapted to take on the somewhat stereotypical roles my wife used to do. It just so happens she was rather good at making cushions, and covers and blinds, and well, all the cosy stuff that makes a home a home. Rather than being up against the presumptions of the general public, suddenly I felt under the spotlight from myself to be a man incorporating a woman’s role and yet retaining my masculinity.
